promarkers - COPICS AND PROMARKERS. Empty COPICS AND PROMARKERS.

Post by Lorraine Sun 16 Aug 2009 - 10:42

I spent hours the other night going through shed loads of websites researching these and from what I can make out, there's little difference between them except the price. Usage is purely down to personal preference. Copics are very expensive and Promarkers are affordable. If you're very wealthy though, I'd go for Letraset Tria markers.

Copics are a 'neater' pen type build, the Ciao range being the smallest and ProM's are bigger and fatter, like a normal marker pen. You can refill the Copics and buy replacement nibs.

Both are alcohol based and both are blendable with or without a blending pen, although the blending pen makes it much easier to get softer lines. They both have two 'nibs'. One large and one finer, but...whereas the ProM's have 2 bullet tips, the Copics have one softer brush tip which some say makes it easier to get smooth flat colour when colouring a large area. However, if you use gentle circular motions with the ProM's, then the same effect can be achieved.

The Copics have a larger range of colours than ProM's due to the fact that they do many colours that are very close to each for shading and blending purposes and they try and sell this fact to you so people buy 3 or more of the same colour ....... this isn't necessary.

Both the Copics and the ProM's have transparent ink. This fact alone makes it possible to blend and shade using only ONE colour. Transparent inks will 'layer' so all you have to do is build up the layers to darken/shade a part of your image. As they are transparent, they will also colour blend, so, for example, if you lay yellow ink over blue ink, you will get green. From just knowing these details, you could start with quite a small palette of colours (primaries and a few others) and be able to colour almost everything. I didn't need to research that bit, as I've used transparent inks and paints before.

So taking all these facts into consideration, and after doing A LOT of price comparision searches, I purchased ProMarkers. I would not buy from Letraset themselves even with a discount voucher (but thanks to Kate for that).

If you just want a couple of sets of 5 and a few singles, or want to build up your collection bit by bit, then JOANNA SHEEN is the best place to go. £6.75 for each 5 set, £1.59 for singles and free p & p.

CRAFTY DEVILS currently have the set of 12 on offer for £13.49, which is an excellent price, but the rest are expensive. There is also £2.49 postage for orders under £35.

COWLING & WILCOX are where I got mine from. Their prices are brilliant. I purchased a set of twelve at £9.95, four sets of 5 at £4.95 each, one single, one blender and a Manga set. Even including p & p of £4.99, the order only came to £48.67. This is a lot cheaper for the amount bought than any other place.

Obviously, if you only wanted a few pens then Cowling & Wilcox would not be your best option, Joanna Sheen would be, but buy a few more things from C & W and it's well worth your effort. They are a Fine Art Store, but also sell crafty bits..A3 cutting mats for £2.99 for example

(OK, just realised that both JS and Devils links don't come up with the Promarker page..Grrrrrrrr, so you'll have to find them, but they are there. Mr Green)

wow thank you for that. I know our shop has been selling them but think I may just have to invest now using your links. Lot cheaper for me doing it that way.

What colour sets did you buy Lorraine?
Sounds like you had fun choosing.

I ordered some of the Promark Comic Art pens as they are double ended
with a bullet point at one end and a wedge at the other.
I've been playing and they are really nice.

Grr just lost my post.

I've placed an order for set of 12 and 2 sets of 5 plus blender. Def works out better for me as our local shop was only selling the packs of 12 and about £3 dearer than here. I know there ispostage to consider but it still works out better for me this way.

Thanks for all your hard work researching Lorraine, will def keep these in mind when I need to get singles as well.

Kim!!!!!!!!! I TOLD you I was posting and as your order won't come out on a weekend I thought you'd wait. I spent hours looking at that lot. That'll teach ya, ha, ha. What did you order?

Karin, I got the set of 12, the Brights, Hues, Skin Tones and Pastels in the five sets, the manga set as it comes with a pad and some drawings too, a single Cocoa (although now realise that is in the Hues set anyway) and the blender pen.

I got he set of 12, Hues and Skin Tones too. I downloaded the PDF file with all the colours, sat and went through them matching to the sets of 5 and decided that the Hues were best. As they can be blended to make another colour I decided against the single lilac. Might have to get another time though, cos you no me and purple !!!!

unfortunately I can't find the promarker video clip that I first watched, I remember it was a Disney princess. This clip uses copics but is entertaining and i love the song, most of the tutorials on you tube for both tend to be Manga cartoons

What card do you use for them Ruth? Was looking on JS forum tonight and they were saying about something called Bristol board and then someone said about using concord record cards (office filing) as recommended by an expert on promarkers, much cheaper alternative and easier to get. Haven't been happy with finish on the card I have tried so wondered if I should get some.

They do seem to be plain if it says smooth blank, others have ruled on the description. Trying to find somewhere with sensible postage, most of the office places are ridiculous, postage more than the cards!

Euroffice prices for concord are really, really good at the mo. In fact it's that cheap, it's worth the £3.95 postage, but free over £30. They tell you if it's blank or ruled too.

Well, I've had a play with mine and....hmmmmm....not too sure about them. The nib is not as fine as I expected it to be so I'm finding colouring small details very difficult. The blender pen doesn't blend either, rather it removes colour so the name is very misleading.

My colour is also bleeding out of my lines, although that's probably the card I'm using. It's probably too porous. It's not the stamping ink that's bleeding (Impress), that's fine, just the colours themselves. Reckon I need some other card.

Good news is though, I've almost cracked the shading. Mr Green That's actually much easier than I expected.

You can see here that the pen nib isn't fine enough to get round the dots on her hat so I had to use a white pen and you can see the colour bleeds too, so no way could I use this example on a card or anything.

Someone on the promarkers group suggested using the blender pen to remove bleeds that go over the lines Lou.

It probably is the card though, mines the same & the pens bleed very easily on it. Maybe when I get a new job I can buy better quality card Mr Green

Tell ya now, wish my 1st colouring attempt had been that bl**dy good Razz

I did push some of the colour back with the blender, Kate, but there's too much bleed and I'd rather not have to anyway if I can avoid it. I'm waiting for some concord to arrive so fingers crossed that'll be the stuff to use.

bl**dy hell, don't think I ever showed my first half dozen attempts on here, both here are god. The blender pen is good for removal of one colour but it is better when you use it on several colours. On the recent hippo cards i did, I used warm grey 1, 2 and 3, layered it up in various places then went all over it lightly with the blender pen in a small circular motion. It still looked shaded but less obvious plus if it is an animal stamp it can give a kind of furry look.

I use memento ink now although did use Ancient Page and neither the ink or the colour bleed on the current card I use unless I try and go over an area I have caught with the blender pen. However on other cardstock I may as well have been using blotting paper! I found some concord card, will hopefully arrive tomorrow, see if that is any better than what i currently use. I also got some smooth card from Richard when he ordered too much from PDA crafts, that was good although not as good as my current card but then the PDA card works well with prismas and oil whereas the current stuff doesn't! Who would have known that just a few years ago paper was simply paper and card was simply card!

This is what I did today. I'm quite pleased and reckon I'm nearly ready to start putting things on cards.

promarkers - COPICS AND PROMARKERS. Girl001

When I sorted all my colours out tonight, I discovered I'd doubled up on 13!!!!!!! Twenty quid wasted, lol. Still, some were in the packs so not a lot to be done about that and the others...well, my own stupid fault for not reading back on what I'd already ordered, lol. Mind you, I'm sure they'll come in some time. Mr Green

It amazes me the difference in card too, Ruth. I paid quite a lot for some really smooth white card from Graphicus and it's rubbish. Won't take the prismas and certainly doesn't like ProM's. I'm hoping the concord will be OK too as I'm only getting it 'cause you mentioned it, lol. I've got 200 index size cards coming so it better be good for summat. Mr Green
