Can anyone tell me
Can anyone tell me what plant/bush/tree this is, it has very very sharp thorns where each leaf stem joins the branch, it is sprouting up round the bush I still have to chop.

Re: Can anyone tell me
I'm afraid I don't know what that is, Billie - and our resident gardener is away for the weekend! If no-one else knows before Patty gets back, I'm sure she'll be able to tell you.

Having had a call from France, I couldn't leave this unanswered, could I? It is a tree Billie, a Gleditsia "sunburst" and will grow rather large!!! (Large, as it 50 or 60 ft high!!!)
Very nice to be needed. Back home tomorrow so will catch up then. xx

Re: Can anyone tell me
Goodness knows where the shoots have come from, as far as I can see there are none like it round here, and yes the thorns a horrible I have little punctures on my fingers, no matter how I tried I could not get hold of it with out coming in contact with one, even went through my gardening gloves.
Thanks Di, Maria, and Patty.
I goggled it to see all about it, and there was 5 different write ups and each one said something different, so funny.

Re: Can anyone tell me
Mystery solved, well done Patty!
Certainly one to get rid of by the looks of it Billie, don't want that growing by the house, one of the grandsons with a spade should do the trick lol.

Lol at the bird poop, took me a minute to realise what Thrifty meant x x
Does it have flowers or fruit ever Patty, if not, pull it out.

Re: Can anyone tell me
No flowers, no fruit, just trouble!!!! Out with it before it gets any larger Billie - it will have come in from a woodpecker droppings, or some other thing like that - not a garden bird like a sparrow or starling or blackbird. It shouldn't be too difficult as they have quite shallow rooting system.

Re: Can anyone tell me
Thanks Patty will have to do that when it grows a bit again as I just cut it right down to the ground, would weed killer get rid of it?, one of the right ups did say there were small insignificant flowers but as they were all diffferent who knows.

Re: Can anyone tell me
Well be careful if you use weedkiller. You can use glyphosate which you spray on the leaves and it works its way down and kills off the roots, but take care if you have anything else in that vicinity. Digging it out is really the best way - can't you find someone who could do it for you? I would come and do it if I were nearer!!
