Seaside garden

Yes, I know I have bored you all senseless with pictures of my little garden in most of my layouts, but I thought you might like to see my tiny wee front garden - I made it into a true seaside garden a few years ago now, with little islands, a pebble pool, even a tiny sandy bit with large sea shells on it. The big red pot - well that's a little gift to me from Ken last October. Isn't it splendid?

A lovely way to make the most of a small space, the bit of decking is clever way to fill the space. What do you have in the red pot?

I can answer both those.....
- the bird house Ken MADE for mum because she saw one she liked in a catalogue somewhere and it was a silly price so Ken just made it. He used to repaint it every winter.
- the red pot contains a miscanthus sinensis 'squaw' which has lovley plumey feathers on it in autumn. Thats the thing that had got enormous and I had to dig up for her in October (when Ken, very sensibly bought her the pot). Ive got a cutting of squaw here too - a little bit of Pattys garden but it is rampantly out of control here (about 6 foot spread)

I just love love love that red pot. Wow its so vibrant, a wonderful splash !! of colour. Love your garden hun, no wonder you proud of it.

It's as neat and smart as I imagined it might be, you do realise that we will need all seasons pics now, so we can see what is growing up that trellis in the summer.
I will not be sending you pics of my seaside garden, it would die of embarrasment next to this.

patty do you trim your old mans walking stick shrub ,sorry i cannot remember the name of it now , the willowy thing that gets catkins this time of year !!! i have one and it has loads more twisty bits , i trim it every year but its just getting too big now

Yes Kim, I am really ruthless with it at this time of year. You can see the front plot is really tiny and I don't want the contorted hazel (that's it's name!) to get too large there. I saw great branches off and also trim off the ends of the swirly bits when they hang too near the gravel, anchor and stones.

Patty - what a lovely garden. We have a small garden. Years ago, I wanted a really big garden,
but of course now, our little patch is just right to manage. I hope one day I'll be able to get
back out in mine and gets a few bits done.

Love this Patty, the beach hut is great, as is all of it.

Great picture, Patty - really must remember to look at your front garden, rather than pass through it, next time I'm up there!

thanks patty maybe i should be ruthless with mine then ,i am always worried id kill it off so am a tad delicate with it .
are you like me and prefer to see it in the winter without its leaves .

Yes Kim, I always think the leaves look rather as if I have let some nasty pest get at them! I can't wait every year for them to fall. It is rather a lovely little tree though, isn't it?

once when me and steve went away for a 2 week holiday , and left jason and tim in charge of the garden and greenhouse as well as the house , i left them clear instructions on watering of plants pots and tubs , feeding and all that has to be done . when we returned tim the youngest said mum ive killed one of the plants , it turned out hed been watering and watering this hazel as he thought it looked thirsty , and seeing as it did not perk up he thought it was dead !!!!i laughed til i cried , he had left the hosepipe on it for about an hour one night

I had a contorted willow, but can't remember seeing it lately, so that might be something else I've killed off. Hellibores, both colours are looking good right now though and I've got a couple of hyacinths up with some pale violas in a pot. I've noticed my sweet peas are starting to grow too.
Love your anchor BTW I always kick myself for not buying one I saw at an auction a few year back it went for £6 and was in really good nick.

Actually, strangely enough the anchor doesn't belong to us! That's why it is padlocked. A big-wig in the Sailing Club passes the house daily and he said his old Dad had a spare anchor we could use if we would like to - and in fact HE would like us to use it. But he did say if we moved he would like it back, so we have it padlocked in case someone else takes a fancy to it. I keep it done with emery paper and black Hammerite to make it look smart ... don't want him to confiscate it if it gets tatty!!

How observant am I ???? I had totally missed the anchor.
