Lacemaking - A NEW CRAFT FOR ME
i went to a lacemaking guild day in haverfordwest today and loved it. i sooooo want to get into lacemaking. it is gorgeous stuff but it takes a long time to do. it was so interesting to see how it's done.
i'm thinking i'll get into it next year after our trip to the states.
has anyone seen this or does anyone do lacemaking? i will be doing research on this and if it doesn't look too complicated or expensive then i'll get into it.

Quite agree Di - I don't think I would have the patience.
Will be interested to see your work though as it is the sort
of craft I admire.

Re: Lacemaking - A NEW CRAFT FOR ME
I tried it a few years ago, Jane. But..couldn't find a use for the bits, so didn't continue with it.
It isn't that difficult to start and the expense is down to you. If you get all the fancy stuff then like any hobby, it can be expensive to start.
Good luck with it and I'd love to see some of your stuff.

Re: Lacemaking - A NEW CRAFT FOR ME
I had ideas of doing this: put all the beads on the bobbins, made the pillow cover and hemmed up some cloths - never got any further. I know I'd have the patience to do it, but I'd begrudge the time it took when I could be doing 15 other crafts instead!
Good luck if you do decide to do it, Jane.

Re: Lacemaking - A NEW CRAFT FOR ME
I tried it years ago. Somebody bought me a lace making starter set. I did enjoy it but like macrame better as not so fiddly, lol. Haven't a clue what happened to all the bobbins.

My Grandma was a lacemaker but something I've never tried, think it's a bit too fiddly for me.

Re: Lacemaking - A NEW CRAFT FOR ME
i think the fiddly part would be putting the pins in. i would definitly start on something simple. it was recommended not to start on anything too small as it more difficult. they usually learn by doing a bookmark.
i'm not ready to get into yet, but was told when i do i can probably borrow the pillow, bobbins etc before putting money out.
i'll update this space nearer the end of the year as i won't think about starting this until after our trip the states in november.
there is someone who does lessons in narberth for £2 for 2 hours so not too bad. i'll just need to check on the bus schedule to there and back.

That's a great price for lessons. I have a friend who teaches and I've had a go at taster days etc, but never made a full pice, you do have to concentrate, but yu can put it down at any point and just pick it up again later, which is good. Time consuming yes, but theraputic.
We got a pillow etc at a car boot for a couple of pounds.
