Cake decoraters, help please.
Just found this pic

I've got a hairdresser cake to make for Friday thought I might try something similar, but, what do you reckon the curly bits are made from and where would I get it/them?
Thanks

Re: Cake decoraters, help please.
I've had a snout about and think it's bear grass.
I'm going to have a play with a bit of black plastic meat tray later and see if that will work. I'll nip into town tomorrow and see what I can find, but it is Lowestoft, and there are roadworks like mad, urgh, wish me well!
Best get back to tonight's project. Is there a procrastinations championship anywhere?

Re: Cake decoraters, help please.
Could it be made from the Sizzix cake machine ? There are some amazing
designs from that. That cake is beautiful.

If you could colour acetate black with a perminent marker cut it into strips and curl as you would ribbon. Might work and save you a trip to town.

Re: Cake decoraters, help please.
I tried the black plastic and could use that at a push, I wouldn't want to put permanent marker on a cake, but the clrear might look nice Scatty.
I'll try the local florists for the bear grass, I've got a feeling that the cake deco shop is shut Tuesdays. Although if I looked in the window I could probably see if they've got any, it's not a big place and isn't too far from school.
Thanks for the ideas girls, and the person who asked on the site for me :)
I've done the top bit for Thursday's cake and even DH said the actual cake ( decoratd by ASDA) is a state. Fine for a photo cake as most of it's covered in ribbon but not really for what I'm using oit for. Has made me feel a bit better about my own abilities, although my royal icing has certainly gone downhill through lack of prcatice and I don't think the vari focals help, it's orright though, just not wonderful.

Re: Cake decoraters, help please.
Thanks Billie, I have some of the florists ribbon, which is what I would call paper ribbon, but it isn't stiff enough to stand up on it's own. Is yours a firm ribbon that would stand?
I need it by Thursday that's the problem, well just one of them, but I've ordered some grass from the florist, she says it'll be in tomorrow, then I'll have to spray it black.
Went back to ASDA and replaced the bumpy cake today, plonked the decorated one on top and allowing it to stand awhile before I pipe round the join, I feel it might sink a little.
Starting on the hairdressers one tonight. No cakes for ages, then 2 in the same week, not that I'm touting for trade, far from it, but at least all the kit is out at once.
