This is a Hardanger sampler: Hardanger is a Norwegian technique, where you stitch round the edge of an area and then cut away the threads of the backing fabric from the area.

That's lovely. I have seen patterns for hardanger but not something I've had a go at.

The first time you do it and you cut the threads away, you're sure the piece is going to fall apart! It's a lovely effect, though, and my biggest Christmas piece - which I'm saving till the end - is in it, too.
